PGESCo presents review of better performing options for desalination industry in ARWADEX 2017
PGESCo participated in 11th Desalination Conference In The Arab Countries ARWADEX 2017 and presented A technical paper published by Eng. Moataz Khalifa, lead of water technologies group in PGESCo titled “review of desalting technologies for low salinity water in industrial application” highlighted technical and economic aspects of different desalting and pretreatment techniques to support the industrial applications.
The paper is presented in International Desalination Association (IDA) session, also it was discussed in the panel the importance of linking power generation and desalination facilities to optimize costs of both power and water.
The interest in desalination technologies is growing due to the fact that there is insufficient fresh water to meet the daily drinking and sanitation needs of all the earth’s inhabitants. Worldwide desalinated water supply must grow faster to meet the demands of a growing human population. It is a fact now that desalination is a technology of choice, as the global water desalination market is expected to expand more.
Paper abstract :
Some decision makers in numerous industrial utilities requiring production of high purity demineralized water from low salinity (< 1000 ppm) water resources prefer using traditional pretreatment technologies such as clarifiers/filters and desalting by ion exchange while modern membrane based technologies such as ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) and Electrodeionization (EDI) have matured into reliable better performing options. They justify this preference by stating that operators, chemists, and labors are oriented to old technologies and in order to adapt current staff to the new technologies, a complicated training and qualifications may be required. In addition, there are claims that membrane based technologies are expensive and require higher investment and operating costs compared to current traditional systems. This paper provides a technical/economic review of different desalting technologies to show how modern membrane based options can be cost-effective replacements to traditional technologies for low salinity river water industrial applications like power generation, fertilizer, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals.
ARWADEX 2017:
